The Ideal Bicycle for Your Daily Needs

Riding a bike can be great for your body, your health and the planet. It can also help you clear your head. Whether you are taking in the scenery on local trails bikepacking or going to take part in a mountain biking competition like Silk Road cycling can stimulate new brain cells in the hippocampus (the area of the brain responsible for memory) and reduce stress levels. It can even help you sleep better as it reduces cortisol, a hormone that prevents deep, restful sleep.

But the best bicycle for your daily needs depends on a lot of factors, from how far you’ll be riding to the type of roads you’ll be using to where you live and what other uses you want to get out of your bike. You might need to carry groceries, a child or other cargo, or be able to commute in traffic. Then there’s the style of bike you prefer and what your budget is.

Some cyclists prefer upright bikes or “cruiser” models. These have flat handlebars instead of the curved ones found on racing bikes, and are designed to be comfortable for long rides. They can also be fitted with racks and fenders for extra functionality, says Susi Wunsch founder of cycling-lifestyle website Velojoy.

Other riders, particularly those who plan to ride for long distances and hills, may need to consider a more sturdy, heavier model of bicycle with a greater range of gears. The Nuroad ebike from German manufacturer Focus, for instance, has an aluminium frame and comes with mudguards, dynamo lights, a kickstand and a rear carrier there are also eyelets for pannier racks if needed.

A lot of discomfort and soreness experienced by cycling is caused by improper posture, but the good news is that it’s an easy fix. Stand with your feet a little wider apart than you would on the pedals, bend your knees and lean forward slightly when you are in the saddle. This will activate the muscles in your lower back and core that support your spine and help to relieve tension.

Whether you’re taking in the sights on local trails, exploring far-flung mountain bike routes or simply enjoying a pedal around the block, it’s a great feeling to be out of your car, breathing in fresh air and moving at your own pace. It’s a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day and can also be socially oriented if you choose to ride with friends or a group.

If you have to use your bike for commuting, then consider a hybrid model. These are ideal for both urban and rural terrain, says Adam Sokol, a sales rep at Ride Brooklyn. He adds that hybrids can be fitted with fenders and pannier racks, if you need to do more heavy-duty commuting or haul cargo. They’re also more affordable than racing or mountain bikes, making them a good option for the everyday rider. You can personalize the look of a hybrid with accessories too so it’s more your own.
